@Catlynn

Oh, they absolutely remember people! Check my #HarrietTheLizard posts (alas, RIP sweet Harriet). And some of the recent ones about Bill the lizard and the iguana. The desert iguanas here are extremely skittish but when I got back recently after being gone since April, I walked over towards it sitting on the wall, whistled a few times and it came right up and took mealworms from my hand. There are two new, smaller ones in the area and they ran right away.

A bunch of them should come up, including videos of the various species and how they interact with me. The spiny lizards, like the one in your picture, are fairly easy to tame. But the whiptail was my best buddy, immediately, happily crawling all over me, even when I got up and started walking around. The iguana took a while, but let me stroke it under the chin.

This handsome critter showed up this morning for the first time since going into hibernation. I managed to lure it in with mealworms, which it eventually took from my hand.

Desert iguana Dipsosaurus dorsalis

The Zebra Tailed lizard in the yard earlier ate a ton of worms that I tossed, but wouldn't come close.

Still no sign of Harriet and Bill, my porch lizard friends from last fall. I'm really hoping to hang out with them again before I have to go north for the summer. It's hot enough now that they should all be coming out of hibernation.

New smol fren!
I haven't seen Bill and #HarrietTheLizard yet, but I assumed they would be hibernating by now. This little critter is living under Harriet's chair on the porch. I've just started making friends with it. It only took a few mealworms before it would take them from my hand.

It is likely not actually responding to me whistling yet, but that's how I train them. They learn pretty fast.

The nearest mealworm store is over 100 miles away. I have two left, which I'm saving for Harriet The Lizard. Bill The Lizard here just got the other two. They're used to getting a handful, so he's sitting on me giving me this expectant look. I even went to the park today to look for grasshoppers, but with the weeks of dry heat there's not a bug to be found anywhere.

I think it might be time for another social visit to Tucson.

Harriet The Lizard lets me sit in her chair sometimes.

Harriet The Lizard has been a little more skittish lately and it just occurred to me that it could be because of the giant toads coming up on the porch at night. She sleeps under the chair and they are potentially big enough to get under there and eat her. A toad is basically a gigantic mouth that hops and swallows things.

Maybe if I'm going to continue hand feeding the toads, I should do it out on the sidewalk and shoo them off the porch.

Bill The Lizard is completely whistle trained. With just a couple of whistles, he came running across the yard from the neighbor's wall to get his morning mealworms. Then when I ran out, he started climbing all over me.
Harriet The Lizard and I already had our morning coffee and mealworm time together.

Harriet The Lizard hangs out on the chair arm first thing in the morning as the day warms up, then when it gets too hot she hides in the shade under the chair until the porch is in the shade again. At that point she climbs up and hangs out on the windowsill for a good portion of the day. I realized she was doing this pose because my old, rattly, aluminum frame windows are so air leaky that a tiny cool breeze flows out. Once I realized this, I cracked the window a little more for her.

How could anyone not fall in love with that face?

I think I'm going to write a magical realist short story about a man who falls in love and marries a lizard. I haven't figured out how it ends yet, though 😂

TBH I won't know the actual sex of these lizards until spring, when mating season comes around and they change colors. If it turns out I have a crush on a boy lizard, does that make me gay?
