Five days before the U.S. military launched a series of air strikes on northern Venezuela and a Special Forces unit armed with blowtorches broke into a Venezuelan military compound to kidnap that country’s president and his wife, a group of shamans gathered on the Peruvian coast, imbibed hallucinogenic cocktails, and predicted that the Venezuelan president would be removed from office in 2026.

Harper's is not holding back about the poor decisionmaking vis-a-vis generative AI at The Atlantic, which recently decided to "partner" with OpenAI.
The partnership not only allows ChatGPT unfettered access to mine every word The Atlantic publishes online, but positions the magazine as “a premium news source within OpenAI.” This troubling consolidation of access to news and information echoes the monopolistic digital land grabs of recent years.

While it’s true that other publications are also caving in to the power of “artificial intelligence,” we’re particularly distressed by the submission of our historical rival, once a great voice of independent journalism. Placing The Atlantic’s logo under the Apple logo is a way of dramatizing that magazine’s sellout to Big Tech, and also to sound the alarm in general about Silicon Valley’s corrupting influence on the American media.
Edit: forgot the link https://harpers.org/2024/09/aboutouroctobercover/

The first thing I thought when I read about The Atlantic's decision was "welp, another media organization has thrown itself into the swamp of sadness". They don't come back from this with their reputation intact. It's good to see Harper's taking them to task for it on their cover.
