After exploring Portmeirion during our Welsh getaway in 2011 we next visited Harlech Castle. Like all the castles we visited on this trip to this part of Wales it was built during Edward I's reign and his conquest of Wales in the thirteenth century, and was also loyal to the royalists during the civil war in the 1600s. In the earlier Wars of the Roses of the late fifteenth century Harlech was occupied by the House of Lancaster but besieged by the House of York, eventually surrendering. This siege formed the basis of the song "Men of Harlech" which is sung in the film Zulu.
