Very impressive guest cast in this one: Lynda Day George, Sam J. Jones, David Spielberg and Philip Baker Hall. But it is Kenneth Mars who steals the episode as a colourful private eye working the same case as the guys. He’s hilarious. In fact, this is one of the episodes that impressed me most back in the 1980s. Because of Mars. I wonder was this a backdoor pilot for his character? Mark goes undercover at a health spa after the suspicious death of one of the judge’s best friends. There’s a lot of comedy in this one, but it’s also very much a script about the loss of a best friend. Philip Baker Hall’s two wonderfully-played scenes are about that aspect of the story, and they strike the landing. The ending leans into it, as well, and is rather heartfelt. _Spring 1985: ABC aired Hardcastle & McCormick as a replacement for Call to Glory in the first hour of Monday prime time before The ABC Monday Night Movie. Against it, CBS had Scarecrow and Mrs. King while NBC aired TV’s Bloopers & Practical Jokes._ 9/10

**Dennis Franz, Jed Allan.** Terrific idea for a story. After they are robbed, our dynamic duo are instrumental in the formation of a neighbourhood watch. Cue: lots of eccentric characters. It soon transpires that all is not what it seems, and Russian agents are behind the break-ins. It’s a fun adventure. Comedic highlights include McCormick picking at a bratty kid in the supermarket, and a scene where both our heroes are hooked up to lie detectors in the police station. Laugh-out-loud funny. 9/10

Larry Gatlin. Lacklustre episode about a country-and-western star who faked his own death. There’s a heck of a lot of singing and a heck of lot of talking, particularly in the first half. We get two very impressive car chases almost back-to-back in the final minutes, but it’s a terribly underdeveloped story. The villains feel like an afterthought. 5/10

3 long Flashdance-inspired dance numbers in this one, with Maylo McCaslin in a series of skimpy costumes, dancing her buns off to so-so covers of famous 80s songs. She’s playing Hardcastle’s niece, a law student whose digging into the past has annoyed a mobster. It’s a funny episode with a clever story by Lawrence Hertzog. We get two impressive car chases, including one where a careening car flies just past the camera. _Fall 1984: ABC aired Hardcastle & McCormick every Sunday after Ripley’s Believe It or Not! and before The Sunday Night Movie. Against it, CBS had Murder, She Wrote while NBC aired Knight Rider._ 8/10

Marc Alaimo, Bonnie Urseth. The ever-adorable Urseth is perfectly cast as a bookish payroll clerk running for her life from an undercover unit of rogue cops. Mark falls for her. Hard. Stephen J. Cannell puts a lot into the script. It’s full of lovely moments, twists, smart dialogue and solid character development (for Mark). There’s no action with the car, but in an episode this good you don’t miss it. Fall 1984: ABC aired the show on Sundays after Ripley’s Believe It or Not! and before the ABC Sunday Night Movie. Against it, CBS had Murder, She Wrote and NBC aired Knight Rider. This episode however aired after the movie (against Trapper John, MD, on CBS) and had the 4th highest rating of the season. While attending business downtown, Mark rushes to the aid of a woman being attacked by men in a mail truck. While he thinks he can find safety from the police officer reponding to their call, the woman informs him the officer is actually a member of an unofficial "underground" police and they are far from being safe.
