From The Archives: Def Leppard – Hysteria

This is “From The Archives” a feature where we take a trip back to a previous decade and discuss an album! We will talk about highlight tracks that should not be missed. As well as reasons why we think the album was so influential and successful.

The Album Breakdown

When Hysteria was released in 1987 it was immediately a landmark record in rock history. It blends hard rock with pop stylings in a way that ensured it was always going to be a commercial success. Every single track feels produced to perfection, with massive hooks and choruses that were made for stadiums.

It followed a difficult period for the band, including something that would have ended most careers… This album stands are a real sign of resilience. It also helped define the sound of the end of the 80s.

Highlight Tracks

The crowing jewel in the album, and some would argue the bands history. It mixes emotion with shimmering guitars and a vulnerable yet powerful vocal display. It’s timeless and instantly recognisable.

Slightly leaning more into atmosphere and melody this track builds slowly with harmonies and textures until it hits it’s massive chorus. The production on this track is the best on the record too.

One of the heavier moments on the album with riffs hitting hard and a driving tempo. A little of the rawness of rock pokes its head out from under all the polish on top. Power and precision in a perfect marriage.

What Is The Best Song By The 1975

From the ashes of the weekly song poll rises “What Is The Best Song By”. A very similar segment where I want to know what your favourite song(s) by the selected artist is! You can let us know in the comments!

The best thing is that if you don’t know the artist then you can see both our recommendations as well as those by other people.

Fox’s Recommendations

This hit comes from arguably their breakout era and their most defining track. It’s smooth, and has a really fantastic production. Pair those with honest lyrics and massive hooks and this song is not leaving your head. It shows how the band can blend parts of songs that usually belong in pop into the alt/rock space.

There is a reason why this song is a real fan favourite! I like it personally because it leans heavier on their indie roots, with energy and emotion. It’s raw and to me that is why it stands out. Vulnerability meets upbeat.

Fox’s Wildcard

This song shows that the band are not scared of pushing their sound a little. They expanded here with ambient textures and a personal message. It feels much more mature than most of their other songs, and perhaps a step in the right direction as songwriters.
