Mitochondrial DNA Pathogenic Variant Prevalence in Primary Mitochondrial Disease Patients With African (L) Mitochondrial Genome Haplogroups

Primary mitochondrial diseases (PMD) are caused by pathogenic variants in over 350 genes, 37 of which are located in mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA). While more than 100 mtDNA variants have confirmed disease associations, there are few reports of ...

Mitochondrial DNA variants and their impact on epigenetic and biological aging in young adulthood

The pace of biological aging varies between people independently of chronological age and mitochondria dysfunction is a key hallmark of biological aging. We hypothesized that higher functional impact (FI) score of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) variants might contribute to premature aging and teste...

A distant Derby cousin and I recently got our Big Y-700 results back. I'm hoping other cousins from the last few centuries to millennium will test too to refine the results, but for now – behold our haplogroup! https://discover.familytreedna.com/y-dna/I-FTF58625

Long COVID: major findings, mechanisms and recommendations - Nature Reviews Microbiology

Long COVID is an often debilitating illness of severe symptoms that can develop during or following COVID-19. In this Review, Davis, McCorkell, Vogel and Topol explore our knowledge of long COVID and highlight key findings, including potential mechanisms, the overlap with other conditions and potential treatments. They also discuss challenges and recommendations for long COVID research and care.

"The first such migration is predicted to have occurred at the onset of the Neolithic, and accordingly J1e parallels the establishment of rain-fed agriculture and semi-nomadic herders throughout the Fertile Crescent. Subsequently, J1e lineages might have been involved in episodes of the expansion of pastoralists into arid habitats coinciding with the spread of Arabic and other Semitic-speaking populations."

Hypothesis: Racist groups have never, to the best of my knowledge, used the #R1b #haplogroup as a pseudo-scientific criterion of whiteness because it's not white enough.

Definitions 🧵:
A #haplogroup is a combination of #alleles that tend to be inherited together.
An #allele is a variation of the same sequence of nucleotides at the same place on a DNA molecule.

#Haplogroups pertain to a single line of descent. As such, individual membership of a haplogroup relies on a small proportion of the #genetic material possessed by that individual.

Mothers pass on mitochondrial #DNA unmixed to all their children; so the #ancestry can be traced along the maternal line.
