Le hang, c’est 2000 en Suisse, Felix Rohner and Sabina Schärer, et leur entreprise, PANArt Hangbau AGa. Puis différentes évolutions.

En décembre 2013, ils annoncent arrêter la fabrication, pour se consacrer à un nouvel instrument, le Gubal, puis d’autres instrument encore.

Le nom « handpan » est apparu en 2007 sur le web du fabricant américain Pantheon Steel, pour désigner un nouvel instrument mis au point pour concurrencer le Hang. Via les forums, c’est devenu le nom générique des instruments similaires.
