In the early 70s Hammer tried to breathe new life into their gothic horror cycle with some fascinating films that broke free of the rigid Hammer formula. Countess Dracula (1971) is one of their most successful efforts. Ingrid Pitt is terrific.

Lust for a Vampire (1971). Possibly excepting Dracula AD 1972 this must surely be the most reviled of all Hammer’s movies.

Its problem is that it's sleazy and trashy but probably needed more sleaze and more trashiness. But it's still good fun.

Ah, Lust for a Vampire . With the possible exception of Dracula AD 1972 this must surely be the most reviled of all Hammer’s movies. Is it ...

Hammer House of Mystery and Suspense (1984), the anthology TV series that was Hammer's last gasp. It's much better than its reputation suggests. In fact it's excellent.

An extremely varied mix of supernatural horror, thriller, spookiness and weirdness.

The German DVD set includes all thirteen episodes in English.

Dracula Prince of Darkness (1966), first Hammer horror film to suggest that vampirism is all about awakening female sexuality.

That's not to say the movie is in favour of female sexuality. The fact that it clearly made the director uncomfortable is what makes it such an interesting movie.

Includes a horrifying staking scene.
