Sort of on @miriamrobern's recommendation, I grabbed "The Gorgon" from archive.org. It's quite good, though very of its time. Screams of terror have come a long way since then, and directors have for the most part learned that long soulful looks from leading ladies aren't quite as interesting as they'd like. Though my goodness you could cut sheet steel with Barbara Shelley's cheekbones, not to mention her vowels.

It has Patrick Troughton in it! One of the early Doctors Who. Took me a few appearances to twig it.

I've downloaded the other three that Hammer put out as a sort of quartet of films, will see if they are also any good. Reading the synopsis of "The Kiss of the Vampire" it looks as if it may well have been a good part of the inspiration for Rocky Horror. Then again, the basic story is pretty common.

At random from a Hammer box set I threw on The Snorkel, and really dug it. Moodily shot with some great real Italian locations, and a tense frustration as everybody ignores a very observant stepdaughter about the world's worst stepfather. The adults are clueless, and the stakes are life or death in a very tense, noirish little thriller. The opening 5 minutes were a particular delight.
