Halo Arc Weakens

By year seven, the station’s main truss showed fractures. The AI predicted catastrophic failure within eight months. There was no more time.

Rajan called the council.

“Evacuation begins in thirty days. We prioritize families and children on the first descent pods. Engineers handle reentry guidance.”

Elias nodded. “We stand together. No divisions.”

The Final Days

Replicators printed hull reinforcements and heat shielding for descent pods. Hydroponic crews harvested everything they could. Seeds were packed into vacuum cases. Every tool was cataloged.

Marcus looked out the observation dome.

“Earth looks quiet,” he said.

Alina replied, “Quiet is better than burning.”

“Do you think life survived?”

“Some microbes. Maybe deep sea organisms. Maybe more.”

“But not cities.”

“No. Cities are ghosts now.”

Touchdown

The first descent pods shook as they pierced the atmosphere. Heat shields glowed bright red. Clouds surrounded them like thick smoke.

Pod One landed in a barren equatorial plain. Soil cracked under the landing legs. The sky looked pale orange but breathable.

Alina stepped out first. She felt the cold wind. It carried no scent.

“This is it,” she said.

Rajan joined her. “Begin site survey.”

Elias stepped down. “We start rebuilding today.”

The New Beginning

Survivors unloaded supplies. Engineers set up atmospheric analyzers and temporary shelters. Children walked on real ground for the first time. Their footprints marked a new chapter.

Marcus smiled as he activated the portable greenhouse.

“Let’s grow again,” he said.

Humanity had returned. The world was wounded but alive. And so were they.

A New Discovery

Three years into the mission, AI sensors detected a temperature rise over the equator. It was small, less than one degree. But it was the first shift in a frozen world.

Alina ran simulation models.

“If this trend continues, surface thaw begins in twelve years.”

Marcus looked at the hologram. “We cannot survive up here indefinitely.”

Rajan said, “Then Earth is our only future.”

The news spread. People cheered. Some cried. Others became anxious.

New Concerns

The outer panels began to degrade. Micrometeoroid strikes increased. Replicators could not replace certain alloy composites. Engineers predicted structural failure in fifteen years.

Elias brought the issue to the council.

“We need a long-term plan. If Earth recovers, we must be ready. If not, we need alternative habitats.”

Rajan replied, “We return home. That is the only path.”

Later, in private, Marcus admitted to Alina,
