Metro Awakening (which was also very good) reminded me how good Half-Life: Alyx was, so I've started playing through it again

current thoughts:

• I forgot how fun the gravity gloves are
• I barely remember anything except the traumatic parts (first dark area with zombies and a ton of gas cans, that one multistory dark house with a jillion dark headcrabs, antlion zoo, Jeff)

Half-Life 2 writer Erik Wolpaw says some people at Valve are looking at AI tools, but he's not "worried about AI taking over creative writing" anytime soon

TIL: Depending if you are Playing Half-Life Alyx under linux with the native runtime or with proton, the savegame folder is
`%GAMEDATA%/game/hlvr/save` or `%GAMEDATA%/game/hlvr/SAVE`.
Which can lead to the situation, that the game thinks, you have no savegames at all (because case sensitive filesystem).

I wonder if with the Steam Frame, Valve will finally improve Half Life Alyx on Linux because it's still very rough with frequent SteamVR crashes during the early level transitions and the performance issues on later chapters. Both native and proton.

The same goes to SteamVR on Linux too.

Even though I already knew the ending scene before playing the game, it just hits differently in VR when G-Man walks around you in circles while occasionally disappearing and you just follow the audio or when he gets close to you. He is just super intimidating the whole time.

Replaying Half Life Alyx currently and it really has the best replayability of all the Half Life games without skipping anything with chapter select. The unskipable dialogue is fairly short.

Half Life 1 and expansions are good too except their beginning, which are annoying.

And Half Life 2 is... well, Half Life 2.

What I love about Half Life Alyx is that in terms of forced dialogue amount it's more like Half Life 1 instead of 2 making replayability a lot better.

I'd even say it beats the first one for the beginning part which is actually not annoying in repeated playthroughs of Alyx.
