Why do we have to stand to be corrected?

e.g., "I stand corrected!" when somebody accepts a correction.

Why can't we sit corrected, lean corrected, lie down corrected, or lie in bed -- oh so very cosy, warm, snuggly, snugglable, and eepy -- corrected?

It's really weird to think that we are kinda legally an Essex girl now, but we don't sound like an Essex girl... or even have much of an Essex accent.
