Responding to the end of slavery (1793) in the #HaitianRevolution (1791), Congress passed a law on #ThisDayInHistory in 1803 to support Southern states that banned arrival of free Black people, and were seizing them from ships & selling them into slavery; about 20,000 were taken.
The #BattleOfVertières happened on #ThisDayInHistory in 1803. It was the last major battle of the #HaitianRevolution and a decisive victory for Dessalines, with most French troops killed. Napoléon had to accept the new republic of the former slaves but isolated it diplomatically.

I am collecting texts and resources on the "Haitian Revolution" for my Human Rights class and I thought I'd share a few things with you.
First of all, this Graphic Novel (online), which helps you understand what happened: "The Slave Revolution That Gave Birth to Haiti" https://thenib.com/haitian-revolution/

And this short article which also gives an overview - both written by historian Laurent Dubois, who is an expert on the field: https://aeon.co/essays/why-haiti-should-be-at-the-centre-of-the-age-of-revolution
