The Sunday Times has blown the cover completely off #HS2 and the mindblowing corruption involved: 15x the cost per mile of the most recent TGV line in France, and the sacking (or paying off) of anyone thought to be gearing up to blow the whistle.

What does cancelling the HS2 leg past Birmingham mean for cities in the North West, and what about the increased car use it will cause?

Now that Sunak has cancelled the high speed rail network project in the North, where should supporters of the project direct their energies?

@nblr As an English dude, I'm going to click, watch, enjoy, and then feel sad that our dumbass government just cancelled half of ours. #HS2 #HS2NothernPhase

@marcusjenkins

HS2 is not about speed, it is about capacity. Local trains are very limited when they have to share a track with fast trains. https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/hs2-logistics-financial-benefit-controversy-a8937936.html

The high-speed rail project comes with huge economic and practical benefits, but politicians have failed miserably at explaining them, Jon Stone argues

HS2 evictees to be told they can buy back their old homes, but at a higher price — inews

Those who sold their homes along the cancelled northern leg of HS2 may have to pay significantly more to buy them back

#HS2NothernPhase Wow they moved quick to sell of the land to thier pals for pennies on the pound. I'd asummed they'd sell some of it to spite any future government who might have considered bringing it back but this quick suggests there's some awfully convienient buyers in wings.
#HS2NothernPhase Whilst I suspect the cancelling of the manc leg of HS2 is *still* only a political pause until, I do foresee the Sunak government giving up some of the compulsory purchase land for pennies on the £ spend aquiring it, just out of spite so it'd be harder to revivie the scheme. I also suspect that £36bn "magic money tree" scrapping HS2 North isn't going to find it's way into wholesome infrastructure improvments....
