The UK had a furore over a fake Admiral at #RemembranceDay in #Llandudno, while #KingCharlie was an authorised fake #FieldMarshal in Whitehall.

But inbreeding is not the UK's approved only path to fake military rank.

#GilbertAndSullivan's "Sir Joseph Porter" was a parody of W.H. Smith, the eponymous bookseller whose political career led him to be #FirstSeaLord.

"He thought so little, they rewarded he
By making him the Ruler of the Queen's Navy!"

@HamonWry My father used some Old Spice product—I think that it was aftershave, but it may have been cologne. I knew their jingle for years before I knew what a “bosun” was, even though my only musical comedy/light opera role ever was as Bill Bobstay, the Boatswain's Mate in #HMSPinafore, when I was in 8th grade. Needless to say, I was not a proper baritone, but I made a pretty good ship’s idiot.

A good thing that the operetta outlasted this review. "Never mind the Why and Wherefore..."

27 May 1878: The music is sparkling and pretty enough, but while there is plenty of absurdity in the plot there is very little real humour

Yesterday, we saw #NYGASP’s #HMSPinafore.

The best part was Cap’t Corcoran falling in love with Little Buttercup. When he confides his woes to her, she shows empathy, and then, as she leaves, the Cap’t brings a telescope up to his eye, scopes out her backside as she bends over, and says to himself/the audience, “A plump and pleasing person.”

The audience laughed.

My hb & I look like the Cap’t & Buttercup.

And I was reminded of how infrequently we see fat women as both admired & DESIRED.
