New revelations that spyware made by a U.S-backed Israeli company was used against at least three European journalists have raised concerns about abuse of commercial spyware even in democratic countries. Canadian digital forensics group Citizen Lab said Thursday that it had new evidence spyware from Paragon Solutions had infected the iPhones of prominent journalists. Meta said in January that Paragon’s spyware had targeted around 90 WhatsApp users from two dozen countries primarily in Europe. There’s been a scramble since then to figure out who was hacked and who was responsible. The Italian government has denied spying illegally on journalists. The company behind the hacks has tried to portray itself as an ethical player. It also does business with the U.S. government.
