As the school district retools is transportation services for the 2025-26 academic year, it is proposing to pay the Houston region's public transit provider so high school students can use its buses and light rail lines.

Bus rides should be shorter this year for many of the 3,000 Houston ISD students who rely on school-district transportation to get to a campus outside of their neighborhood, although they may need to go farther from home to get to their bus stop.

Houston ISD reducing number of bus routes for 2024-25 to cut costs, travel times

As part of a series of changes affecting the roughly 3,000 HISD students who do not attend their zoned campus, assigned bus stops will be within a 3-mile radius of a student's home after previously being within 2 miles.
