These are symbols of St Eric's Day, - a saint that seems to have absorbed some elements of the god Frey. One of my favourite pieces of medeival history is that of a grateful Swedish peasant who had gotten through sickness and gratefully went up to Uppsala and (wait for it!) SACRIFICED A HORSE to St. Eric.
