Christ Church Spitalfields is an Anglican church built between 1714 and 1729 to a design by Nicholas Hawksmoor. It is on Commercial Street in the East End of Central London.

By 1960 Christ Church was nearly derelict and the roof was declared unsafe. The Hawksmoor Committee staved off the threat of demolition and ensured that the roof was rebuilt.

Today it has been completely restored and is a Grade 1 Listed Building.

#silentsunday #hawksmoor at sunset #EastLondon I especially love the trees. Here in London we have so many trees that we are technically considered by the UN to be a forest

I'm very happy with this redesign of #Player #Handout A for Return of the Ripper. Thanks to @Printdevil for help with sourcing the beautiful background image. I laid out the foreground text and #vector art using #Inkscape. The words are inspired by #Hawksmoor by #PeterAckroyd.

@Taskerland I enjoyed your review of #Hawksmoor by #PeterAckroyd

I would include #MichaelMoorcock in the Holy Trinity of London #authors who like #psychogeography. He hung out with Ackroyd and Sinclair and his own novel "Mother London" shares some thematic and structural similarities: a tale with an ensemble cast of three main characters whose lives intersect, told in a non-linear narrative that jumps back and forward through several decades of London history.

REVIEW: Hawksmoor by Peter Ackroyd

First published in 1985, Hawksmoor is the third novel by Peter Ackroyd, the admirably well-established critic, biographer, and author responsible for the hugely popular London: The Biography. Well-…

I'm staying near St. Paul's. I love looking at old churches, but if I'm honest, I much prefer the dominating presence of a #Hawksmoor with their classical pillars, weird #obelisk shaped bell towers, and strange lack of Christian iconography.

St Anne's Church, Limehouse (Nicholas Hawksmoor, consecrated 1729). This Anglican congregation recently rejected a House of Bishops' proposal to permit the blessing of same-sex relationships.

"We affirm the beauty, as commended in scripture, of both marriage and celibate singleness. We seek to provide good pastoral support for those who may struggle to live by this teaching and welcome all people to St Anne’s, regardless of their sexual status or orientation."

It is perhaps significant that all four members of the church staff listed on its website came to Christianity as adults. #stannes #limehouse #hawksmoor #london
