During the City Nature Challenge last weekend we organised bike field trips here in the coastal Amazon region with our students. One of them photographed a native gymnosperm, a species of Gnetum. These are frequently not recognized as such β€” at first glance, they look like any angiosperm liana, especially in sterile conditions. However, the swollen nodes of the seed-bearing strobili give them away when examining more closely.

Did #dinosaurs pollinate some #Mesozoic #gymnosperms?
This is an idea I've had which is explained below, but there are some caveats to this, one of which being a lack of corresponding/ conspecific female organs also with suitable anatomy. Thoughts? #paleobotany #paleoart #plants

How do seeds travel from one place to another? Why do #flowers have different colors and shapes, and how do some turn into fruits? How did these two types of reproduction evolve? And why are seeds and flowers important to plants, animals, and humans? πŸŒΉπŸŒΈπŸ’πŸŒΊπŸŒ»

In the latest episode of #CrashCourse, American forager and cook Alexis Nikole Nelson introduces the plant kingdom’s evolutionary innovators: #angiosperms and #gymnosperms. 🌱🌱

My Welwitschia mirabilis is doing pretty well after a couple of years living outside in Tucson! Growth slows down every winter and you can see the lines on the leaves. I got this back in February 2021 when it still had cotyledons - it has grown a lot since then (at least I think it is a lot for a Welwitschia!). #Welwitschia #Tucson #botany #plants #gymnosperms

Dear Friends,

This #pine locate in the eastern #SierraNevada #Mountains in #Nevada (elev. about 8,00 ft / 2,500 m ) with what I think are the male cones (strobili). Not sure what kind of pine it is but it is very appealing. 🌲

I hope you have a lovely day.

Due to having a life, family care, eye trouble (now solved) and whatnot, I've not contributed to Mastodon as much as I'd like to, but as a sign of life, here's a giant redwood (Sequoiadendron giganteum) in Lunteren's Pinetum, shot yesterday with my humble cellphone. It was a great afternoon for photography: sunshine interspersed with brief downpours, which made the colours a feast to my now cataract-less eye. Have an excellent week, my tooting friends!

#Pines and #junipers are non-flowering plants--#gymnosperms. So why do botanists refer to pine and juniper "flowers" and "flowering? Anyone know?
