MG GTO RX-78-2 (Complete)

I finally finished all the weapons for the #MasterGrade #GundamTheOrigin #RX_78_2. This thing has so many extras. I didn't even show off any of the effect pieces in this photoshoot. The shoulder cannon is a neat addition to the design (compared to MSG), and I really like the new beam rifle. Overall, a fantastic kit.

I do still need to paint the pilot figures, but at this point I have a handful that I'll paint all at once.

MG GTO RX-78-2

No full photoshoot yet, since I haven't finished all its weapons, but here's a brief look at #MasterGrade #GundamTheOrigin #rx_78_2. The LED looks really good in decent light, and it's super bright in the dark (maybe a bit too bright; might paint the inside of the top of its head to keep the light from bleeding through).

I won't complain too much about the hands (again), but I do wish they had included some fixed pose holding hands.

At first, I assumed Lalah had green eyes because anime characters often have unrealistic eye colors, but according to Tomino, she's meant to be mixed-race.

"Her real eyes were emerald-green and hinted at an ancestry more complex than that of most Asians."

That's a quote from Awakening, the first Gundam novel he wrote.

Sometimes I will see Lalah on lists of Black anime characters and there is always some loser getting mad about it, going, "She's Indian, not Black!" It is true she is (usually) from India, but she can be Black, too. Her exact heritage has never been consistent anyway... In this book she is a spacenoid from Loum. Later Tomino made up a different backstory for her in Lalah's Secret Rendezvous, and she is from Delhi, India. In Gundam the Origin she is also an earthnoid from India, but her family is from Mumbai. In For the Barrel her mother is from Nepal, and in Char's Daily Life her father is Japanese.

I don't understand the way Gundam fans talk about "canon." I saw someone say once that you shouldn't watch the original Zeta anime, or ZZ or CCA, because the New Translation movies "decanonized" them...

And then there were people claiming Bandai "decanonized" Sulemio. They get engaged in episode 1 and are married in the finale! It doesn't matter what Bandai says, that doesn't alter what's in the show. And the endless arguing over whether Origin is a different "timeline" or not is so annoying, too.

When I was in middle school I wasn't really into fandoms, but I was fascinated by Roman mythology. There's a million different versions of those stories. No one ever tries to sort those into "timelines." Imagine if someone said, "Virgil wanted the Aeneid burned on his deathbed so it's not canon and you should skip it." That's what all this nonsense sounds like to me...

When a series goes on as long as Gundam has, people will re-interpret it in different ways. It's like a fairy tale. It's all imaginary so there is no one "true" version. I think some people forget how to play pretend properly when they grow up. They treat fiction like history (or theology?) instead of art.

Recently I realized Tomino put lots of Hindu and Buddhist themes into Gundam, but I haven't seen anyone talk about this. I guess that makes sense, since it's not like the average English-speaker knows much about either religion. Hell, I only know a tiny bit myself, but it's enough to notice certain things.

And there's also the Origin and Aum Shinrikyo connection. That's a whole 'nother big thing that people never discuss, even though Origin makes way more sense as a story/remake when you realize what Yasuhiko was responding to.

I'm just thinking out loud right now, but when I have time, I do want to write about this stuff with more detail. Gundam has so much spiritual and cultural stuff going on that often gets "lost in translation" for fans outside of Asia like myself... It's quite interesting to learn about. Adds a deeper level.
