Strike-breaking corporate sell-out Democrat #GroverCleveland signed into law a federal #LaborDay holiday on #ThisDayInHistory in 1894, ostensibly to celebrate the very #union movement he worked to crush, and bypassing the #socialist #MayDay holiday already honoured by US workers.

Cleveland Ledge Lighthouse sits in Buzzards Bay about two miles out from the nearest shore; so minus a boat, drone, or high-powered telephoto lens, it’s pretty tough to get a clear image. I’ve tried several times, and these are as good as I’ve gotten:

Photo 1: Taken 7/4/23 from the west side of Buzzards Bay
Photo 2: Taken 3/19/23 from North Falmouth, on the Cape side of the Bay

Construction of the lighthouse was completed in 1943, which I believe makes it the “newest” lighthouse in Massachusetts — at least I can’t think of any more recent. Despite its relative newness, this lighthouse certainly captures my imagination: for me, the more remote and inaccessible a lighthouse is, the more mysterious it is, and therefore the more appealing. Plus, I’m a sucker for anything Art Moderne.

Trivia Bonus: I’ve often wondered why the shoals the lighthouse is built on were named Cleveland Ledge — this being Massachusetts and not Ohio. Turns out it’s named after the president, not the city. Originally known as Pocasset Ledge, it was a favorite fishing spot for President Grover Cleveland, who spent summers in Bourne while in office (and presumably while out of office: he served two non-consecutive terms). Over time it took on his name.

Book Review #5 for 2025 is Troy Senik's A Man of Iron: The Turbulent Life and Improbable Presidency of Grover Cleveland. A fair and readable treatment of the first US President who was the first elected to two non-consecutive terms. What strikes me, juxtaposed against the turbulence of current policy, was the move to professionalize the Civil Service

As if the cruelty was not enough. As if the hate was not enough. As if the countless nightmares about to descend on those who are not sufficiently kissing the ass of our new overlords were not enough. The fucking Cheeto has also taken away Grover Cleveland's record of being the only US president to be elected to two non-consecutive terms.

Them: I know of Grover Cleveland, Trump is no Grover Cleveland.
Me: Cleveland married a 21 year old while he was in his late 40s whom he had groomed as he was legally her guardian for a while. As President he opposed federal voting rights laws, sent troops to put down striking workers, signed anti-immigration laws, and was non-interventionist while wanting to put troops closer to our borders.
Them: Okay, maybe Trump is like Grover Cleveland.

Trump is claiming that his win is the biggest political comeback in history. I mean #GroverCleveland says hi, but whatever.
