Why Your Grip Could Be Your Longevity Secret
New science reveals forearm strength isn't just for bodybuilders—it's a silent predictor of life and death.

· Grip strength independently predicts mortality risk in older adults
· Stronger forearms correlate with better survival in those with low bone mass
· Viral training trends oversimplify the science—real benefits come from functional strength

Grip Strength Predicts Longevity? New Science Reveals All | Fit Body Science

New research shows grip strength is a powerful predictor of mortality. Discover why forearm strength matters more than you think—and what the science says about saturated fat.

Fit Body Science

I think my grip strength has improved recently, just as my back pain seems to be diminishing. I started static stretching in the morning, which has helped me with back pain in the past (sciatica).

A couple of years ago I noticed that when I drink home-made kefir my strength overall seems improved. I can't say for sure if my grip strength has improved - it just seems easier to crush empty milk cartons before putting them into the recycle bin.

I discarded my kefir grains before I moved and have only recently found a store-bought brand (Rolling Meadow) I could tolerate. All other dairy causes painful swallowing. Unfortunately it is not always in stock, so I tried making kefir using Yogourmet starter and Rolling Meadow milk, which is grass-fed. It turned out to be better tasting and cheaper, and also I wasn't getting a noticeable effect on strength from the RM kefir - so I'll keep making the Yogourmet plus RM milk kefir.

I wondered if any studies had been done on grip strength and kefir consumption and I found this:

Why You Should Use Lifting Hooks on Back Day | Fit Savanna

Lifting hooks remove grip as the limiting factor in back training, allowing you to train your back muscles to true failure rather than stopping when your forearms give out.

#PullUpProgram Week 8 day 1

Warm up: 3 rounds
- 1' thoracic foam rolling
- 20 banded pull apart
- 10 dead bug overhead let down

It's a spicy combination: 5 rounds
- 100 ft / 30m (heavy) farmers carry
- 20 dead bugs
- 10 prone Ys

Long day at the office, plus still not recovered from the weekend and the last two days at the office, this felt heavier than it should have. But still: done. 3 more days and this round of the program is finished.

The Argument for Grip Strength as a Vital Sign
Body temperature, weight, heart rate, and blood pressure inform any patient appointment. Should physicians include grip strength in that group?
Grip-strength testing is easy, fast, and noninvasive. It can be monitored over time. All it requires is a handgrip dynamometer, a tool that may cost less than a stethoscope, and a chair.
