When the #Faroese report the number of animals killed in a #grindadráp, don’t be fooled by the official count.
We’re told 246 long-finned pilot #whales were slaughtered in #Leynar. But photos show animals marked as high as #296, including a calf labelled #277. So, which number is right? 246 or 296?
The truth is: neither.
Why? Because the Faroese only count the animals they intend to eat.

246 pilot #whales were killed in #Leynar, #FaroeIslands, including at least 30 pregnant females and their unborn calves.
Our crew on the ground has revealed the true scale and cruelty of this #Grindadráp. While
officials claimed a 15-minute hunt, our footage shows over 30 minutes of chaos, plus an hour of terror as the pod was driven into the killing beach.
Newborns, discarded. Mothers, gutted. Some whales struck by boat propellers.
This isn’t tradition. It’s a crisis.
The first #Grindadráp of the summer is set to begin in #Leynasandur , #FaroeIsland.
Once again, hundreds of #dolphins will be killed in the name of tradition. As every year, our crew is there to expose and report on the #slaughter.
These animals are not killed for survival, but for custom—by one of the richest nations on Earth. This has to stop.

Every year in the Faroe Islands, an archipelago which is a protectorate of the kingdom of Denmark situated just 230 miles north-west of mainland Scotland - around 1150 small cetaceans, primarily long-finned pilot whales and Atlantic white-sided dolphins are massacred in drive hunts called ‘grindadráp’ (Faroese for the killing of pilot whales).
The grindadráp (or ‘grind’ as the hunts are commonly called) has no season,

The tragic slaughter of 90 pilot whales in Hvalvik, #FaroeIslands —and a staggering❗592❗in just 8 weeks—demands our immediate action.
'There is no easy solution to ending this cruelty. The older generation of whalers are holding on to their traditional killing like their lives depend on it, and they are doing their best to inspire the younger generation to join in.' - Valentina Crast, Shepherd's Faroe Islands Campaign Lead

Today I realised there is one motion against grindadràp in the European Parliament! It's called "MOTION FOR A RESOLUTION on whale and dolphin hunting in the Faroe Islands", with code B9-0217/2024:

In case you don't know what it might mean, read this:

In case you don't know what is that barbaric thing called #grindadrap, it's very likely the one and only reason why the #FaroeIslands are not part of EU:
