🇺🇸 The greylag goose (Anser anser) is a large and powerful waterfowl species and the wild ancestor of most domestic geese. Native to Europe and western Asia, it measures 74–91 centimeters in length with a wingspan of up to 180 centimeters and weighs between 2.5 and 4.5 kilograms. Greylag geese are recognized by their gray-brown plumage, pale head, and orange to pink bill. They inhabit lakes, wetlands, rivers, and agricultural landscapes, feeding mainly on grasses, roots, grains, and aquatic plants. Highly social, they form strong pair bonds and are often seen in family groups. Many populations migrate seasonally, while others remain year-round in milder regions.

🇩🇪 Die Graugans (Anser anser) ist eine große, kräftige Gänseart und gilt als Stammform der meisten Hausgänse. Sie ist in Europa und Westasien heimisch, wird 74–91 Zentimeter lang, erreicht eine Flügelspannweite von bis zu 180 Zentimetern und wiegt etwa 2,5–4,5 Kilogramm. Typisch sind das graubraune Gefieder, der helle Kopf und der orange- bis rosafarbene Schnabel. Graugänse leben an Seen, Flüssen, Feuchtgebieten sowie in landwirtschaftlich genutzten Landschaften und ernähren sich überwiegend von Gräsern, Wurzeln, Getreide und Wasserpflanzen. Sie sind sehr gesellig, gehen lebenslange Paarbindungen ein und treten häufig in Familienverbänden auf. Viele Populationen ziehen im Winter nach Süden, während andere in gemäßigten Regionen ganzjährig bleiben.
