Gretchen drew inspiration from the story of Francine Hughes; she'd set fire to her home in March 1977 after enduring 13 years of an abusive relationship, her ex-husband did not escape.
A jury found Hughes not guilty of murder charges due to 'temporary insanity', recognising that being trapped for years can drive a person mad.
