Greta Van Fleet - 'The Battle At Garden's Gate'. ⚔️🏰 🎸⚡💿 (16 April 2021)

Even now, their second EP, 'From The Fires', is probably what most people know them for, but I would say their second studio album, 'The Battle At Garden’s Gate', is their best work so far. It just feels bigger in every way, from the overall concept to the soundscape, even if it does get a bit self-indulgent here and there, especially given it runs just over an hour. I think part of what makes it land so well is how ambitious it is without completely losing its grip. The album leans heavily into that classic rock DNA (as expected), with bits of prog and even a touch of folk here and there, but still manages to sound like its own thing rather than just a throwback. As always, there is no denying where their influences come from. With this album, they have definitely managed to take those influences and shape them into something that genuinely sounds like their own. The production is noticeably richer too, more layered and more cinematic, giving tracks like “Heat Above” and “Age of Machine” a proper sense of scale (the latter always gives me the chills, in a good way). As always, the musicianship is spot on throughout, and the guitar work is far more textured than on their earlier releases, not just riffs but proper atmosphere, and the rhythm section gives everything a solid backbone without ever feeling overworked. Furthermore, I also feel there there was a clear effort to make the album feel cohesive, with themes and motifs that carry across the runtime, which makes it more rewarding if you sit down and listen front to back. All in all, it is a fantastic album in my book and one that shows real growth from the band. Definitely worth a listen!
