from an email to John M. Bennett & mg:

5 mini fictions

The Blog Bernard was waiting for the cold coffee to heat up in the small pot on the red hot stove element. While waiting for the above to transpire he typed letters of the elephant onto the backside of an elphabet. Then he started to wonder what sort of state the moon was in at that moment. He knew next to nothing about real genuine serious astrology (if there was/is such a thing) but he’d always figured there must be some truth behind the idea that the planets and outer space which is the same space we are in, he recently realized as a minor epiphany, would have an effect and influence on us. And it followed that we could and must, just as well, have an effect on them and it. Bernard once got an astrology reading done by a friend of his who was an amateur astrologer who often lamented, “I hate that it works.” They were both amazed at how seemingly “right on” he was. In fact, Bernard found it all inspirational. His friend told Bernard some things about Bernard’s creative process which Bernard had up till then not been cognizant of. Now when confused Bernard recalls that insight and instantly it helps him. Then someone made a comment about how sad it was that very few people ever bother to comment on his blog. Then some six plus months went by without a single comment even from that person who’d lamented the paucity of comments. * The Mockery of a Noun The Hebrew was a friend of mine. Then one day his skin went from decidedly white to decidedly brown. Then he started to sing like someone might have done long ago on a planet called INDIA. Eventually he formed a musical organization known as a band which he called The Group. The Group played in jazz clubs and whatnot till they became both famous and infamous and were able to fill large sports stadiums. I phoned him one day to congratulate him on his success. I said, “Is Dave there?” I could tell it was my old Hebrew friend Dave who was on the other end of the line. But the voice said, “No Dave here.” I decided to play his game because I felt my game would have been too difficult, unpleasant and embarrassing. And so I said “Oh, I must have the wrong number. Sorry. Have a nice life.” Then I hung up the phone just as I heard the voice of my old Hebrew friend utter, “No problem.” That was the last time I spoke to my old Hebrew friend. I followed his career over the years as reported in the various entertainment branches of the media till one day I was asked to write a small obituary for him for the small daily of the small town I was living in, which I did. I decided to keep “Dave” out of it. *
Mack’s Milk The stranger spoke up and said, “I am the death of you.” “Fuck off,” said all those who were not strangers which really was everyone else. Then the stranger said, “Please pop your hoods.” In response those who were not strangers and who by now were all standing in line, turned so their backs faced the stranger and they each in unison mimicked pulling down their pants as if offering the stranger their asses to fuck. The stranger laughed as did all those who were not strangers. Then someone in the lineup yelled, “Meaning has left the building!” First the stranger thought, No it hasn’t. Then he said just loud enough for everyone to hear, “No it hasn’t.” *
Man from Scotland It’s not that a wink is a wink is a wink. Winks have signatures. Like the man at the office as you/we all know has his own way of winking. Makes me wonder and ponder the possibility that Stein’s line about roses might also be untrue. In fact, there is nothing sacred but (or about) the truth. He smoked his double and it was too late to quit and take up a stranger. In the end, the end spoke up and said, “Okay, are we ready to begin?” I nodded sheepishly as the flames wrapped themselves around my body and I thought, Goodbye and good riddance.

*

The Policy It was our policy to never in exactly a million years allow ourselves to be penetrated in that way. I.e,. we were not ever going to let ourselves find ourselves without a job or other form of income so as not to live in fear of becoming homeless. It’s amazing how much we don’t care who becomes homeless as long as it’s not us. Then white Janet with the long blonde hair and even longer porcelain legs asked me if I wanted to take a shower with her. All I could think of for eons were the two words, “Yes” and “Revenge.” Yeah, what a great way to get back at her IBM boy friend for being such a cultural ignoramus. Actually they were married at that point (of view). Some authors stand up when they’re writing. “Knock, knock… knock… knock, knock.” “Who’s there?”’ “Is Dave there?” “Dave is not here.” “Do you know where he is or when he’ll be back?” “No, but if you want you can come in and fondle me while you wait and talk on your cell.” “Thanks. Do you think you have room for my bike and my toboggan and my piano and your own kitchen sink multiplied by five?” “Maybe.” “Do you have any butter?” “Of course.”
