🐢🐢 TURTLE TUESDAY 🐢🐢

🌏 Tiny Raine Island is the largest nesting site for 90% of endangered Green Sea Turtles. Unfortunately, rising sea levels are creating slopes that cause hatchlings to flip over and die. Climate change's heat is causing too many females to be born.

💪 But an intrepid group of egg relocation specialists, armed with high tech and knowledge from Indigenous groups nearby, is saving the day. They have relocated eggs at scale to a safer island.

🌊 This year, more than 9,100 northern Great Barrier Reef green sea turtle hatchlings have begun their journey to the sea. An amazing 82% of the relocated eggs hatched and made it to the water.

✅ This is another example of a conservation effort that is successful because it uses Indigenous knowledge to be ecological and sustainable.

Thousands of green sea turtle hatchlings swim to sea in conservation win

The project at Raine Island, where 90 per cent of northern green sea turtles nest, has been working for a decade to improve hatching success.

Endangered green sea turtles face a tough battle on Loosiep Island, Micronesia, where their nests are being raided by pigs, rats, and lizards. A new community-led initiative is stepping up to protect these turtles by eradicating invasive pests while also boosting local farming efforts. Together, they’re working towards a sustainable future for both wildlife and agriculture! #Conservation #WildlifeProtection #Sustainability #GreenSeaTurtles #Extinction
