Dismantling of key ocean ‘telescope’ raises fears of U.S. retreat from marine science

"Many science questions addressed by the moorings targeted for removal have demanded observations that span multiple seasonal cycles. For example, Palevsky began to use OOI moorings in the North Atlantic a decade ago to study how surface carbon mixed into the abyss, but only began to answer those questions in a study published this year. Off the Pacific Northwest, meanwhile, a pair of moorings has revealed how cold, deep waters periodically migrate onto the coastal shelf, triggering bouts of hypoxia and acidification."

#Greenspaces and #canals are very common in #Berlin, as seen in these #photos: the #treelined #SchlesischeStraße and the #Flutgraben #canal with the famous techno venue "#ClubderVisionäre." Green spaces and #waterways can be havens of #urban #biodiversity. However, canals can also release #greenhousegases, but they can simultaneously act as #carbonsinks.

Remember How Sucking Carbon Out of The Air Was Going To Save The Planet? We Have Terrible News

Shutterstock / Futurism The idea of sucking CO2 out of the atmosphere to combat climate change might be a necessary intervention, but it always sounded like a longshot. Unfortunately, it seems like the strategy is already hitting a wall. A new report published this week found that ongoing carbon dioxide removal (CDR) efforts are barely putting a dent in the fight against global warming  and that for them to start making an impact, they would need to be scaled up at a rate that rivals the […]
