Despite facing significant obstacles in securing rehearsal and performance spaces due to the closure of Lawrence Tower, the show will go on for Off The Lake Productions.  The student-run, service-based theater organization is gearing up to bring its latest theatrical productions of “Trojan Women” and “Legally Blonde” to life at the Ohio Musical Theater Institute […]

Washington City Paper: Scena Theatre Offers an Extraordinary Retelling of Sophocles’ Ajax

I've enjoyed Scena's past productions -- the ones I've seen have been intense and sometimes violent; they've been kind of punk.

"The production is an extraordinary one, with a strong cast guided by a strong vision. McNamara and movement consultant Curtis have created a stylized movement vocabulary for this show that at times recalls the discrete and focused movements of both Noh and the corporeal mime of Etienne Decroux.

Ceville, his neck and torso splattered with stage blood, gives a muscular performance, both literally and figuratively, displaying the power that makes his former comrades frightened of what he might do next, yet clearly aware of the shame and dishonor his actions have brought. "

@Bronwyn When I was in graduate school taking a course on Aeschylus, I mentioned to the professor that I found parts of the 'Agamemnon' to be funny.

The professor made me swear never to teach tragedy.

(Although I am not a Hellenist, that was a promise I did not keep, as several years later I did get assigned to teach Greek Civilisation, which included ancient tragedies in translation. I did not, however, teach them as comedies.)

Strangely still too relevant a classic drama of one who stands alone against politics based in fear, who gives mankind nothing less than culture and the concepts of self-will and hope.
