Great Auk (Yowies Forgotten Friends Series A by Cadbury)

The tragedy of the Great Auk is a tale that covers much of the globe. These sea birds lived across the Atlantic, catching fish and having large flocks across islands throughout the Atlantic. They were killed for down in pillows, the bills for Native American charms and for fuel and food for sailors. As numbers decreased, museum collectors ordered specimens be killed to add to their own […]

I recollect my father telling me a story he'd heard when he was a kid that had been passed down through generations. A big, strange bird swam into harbour, and no one knew what it was. People decided it was a witch and killed it, but it ended up being a great auk.

It could be a true story. The birds were once common in Newfoundland. https://www.smithsonianmag.com/smithsonian-institution/with-crush-fisherman-boot-the-last-great-auks-died-180951982/

When the Last of the Great Auks Died, It Was by the Crush of a Fisherman's Boot

The great auk, Pinguinus impennis, has been extinct since the mid-19th century. Humans hunted the bird for its down, which was used to fill pillows, and this was the main driver behind its extinction.

This specimen in the collections of the #NottNatHist Museum is a model rather than a taxidermy mount. It is on loan to the University of Nottingham.

> The down industry in particular helped propel the bird to extinction. After exhausting its supply of eider duck feathers in 1760 (also due to overhunting), feather companies sent crews to Great Auk nesting grounds on Funk Island. The birds were harvested every spring until, by 1810, every last bird on the island was killed.

Last night I learned that the last great auk was killed because it was suspected of being a witch. Humans have some wild ideas. #natureofmastoson #NaturalHistory #GreatAuk #extinction #bird #witch
The last witch of St. Kilda. The last sighting of the Great Auk in the British Isles was in 1840 when islanders in Stac an Armin suspected the bird was a witch and the cause of a tremendous storm #skilda #greatauk #stacanarmin #brianmchenry
