A Carved Stone Cross Amidst the Whispering Gums

Angaston Cemetery, Angaston, South Australia.

As the town of Angaston grew and the original cemetery became too small, twelve local citizens purchased four acres from Johann Gottfried Hanisch in 1867 to establish a new cemetery.

These men, among them Charles Holmes, James Jepson, and David Tavender, ran it as a private concern until the District Council of Angaston acquired it in 1911.

The cemetery has since remained a key historical and genealogical site for the region. Itโ€™s now located at 302 Angaston Road, with thousands of memorials documented and photographed.

Ask.com, one of the earliest attempts at conversational search engines, has shut down 30 years after its debut. โ€œEvery great search must come to an end,โ€ reads the headline on the now-defunct website. โ€œAs IAC [parent company] continues to sharpen its focus, we have made the decision to discontinue our search business, which includes Ask.com. After 25 years of answering the world's questions, Ask.com officially closed on May 1, 2026."

This led to the development of many different ways to try to thwart them, including using large stone slabs to top the graves, adding heavy stone memorials directly over the buried coffin, adding metal grilles, and surrounding them with iron cages made by local foundries, such as Fulton and Son of Trongate in Glasgow.

Mortsafes and other devices from the Ramshorn Cemetery in central Glasgow which were used to ensure the dead stayed in their graves. They were needed because prior to the anatomy act of 1832, freshly buried bodies were at risk of being stolen by resurrection men (also known as bodysnatchers), who would sell them to local medical schools for dissection by their students.

โ€“ From Wolfgang Borchert's poem "There's only one choice" ("Dann gibt es nur eins"), written in 1947 shortly before his death at just 26.

I'm not usually into poetry and grand literature, but reading Borchert's works about World War II and its aftermath at school left a lasting impression on me. So whenever I see memorials or #graves from that time, Borchert isn't far from my mind. You can read the full poem in English and the original German, along with context and links, here: http://www.swans.com/library/art13/xxx123.html
