What Is A Grandparent Actually Good For?
https://fed.brid.gy/r/https://defector.com/what-is-a-grandparent-actually-good-for
We're off for a cheap early dinner (5:30pm reservation) at the local club tonight with the wee one. Driving rather than walking as is our usual wont. Too cold, too wet, and too far for the wee one*.
*I'm a bit knackered too, to be honest.
We had a pretty good day at home today.
I managed to write a commissioned article and send it off before lunchtime while the wee one and Granda (husband) watched Bluey.
Played outside with the wee one in the glorious Canberra winter sun with the tonka truck and then had running races against said truck down the sloping driveway (set up log barricades against going on the road).
Husband made up a giant batch of pasta sauce, some to eat now and the rest to freeze for later. Wee one is eating his now while I fold some of the multitudinous loads of washing I did today. We'll eat our dinner a little later accompanied by a well deserved glass of wine each.
I had such a good day today...
I got myself and the wee one dressed and organised early without any drama (preschool day).
Had a late breakfast meeting in Civic that seemed to go well.
Went to the theatre and saw a fabulous matinee performance.
Had lunch afterwards with theatre friend.
Bought a great handbag - on special.
Had a meeting with CYF that seemed somewhat positive(?).
Nice quiet evening with husband and wee one with no bath or bed angst.
This was basically my day today.
- Get the wee one fed and dressed.
- While husband drives the wee one to 3yo preschool, I catch a bus to go to 10am movie screening with friend.
- During the movie, my phone was on silent but... received a call from CYF, a text from CYF, texts from the wee one's mother, email from CYF, email from preschool re Covid exposure (movie was approx 2.5 hours).
- Come straight home to do some work.
- Fill out 10 page carer assessment forms for husband and me.
- Do more work while husband picks up the wee one.
- Play toddler games in a giant cardboard box.
- Feed and bathe wee one.
And now I'm hiding (having a bath) while husband and the wee one watch Bluey.
Took the wee one to Woden Plaza indoor playground for a supervised contact visit with his mother yesterday. Glad that's over. Exhausting. They want us to do them a couple of times a week until an order is granted. Still waiting to hear when that will be.
CYF will supervise another contact visit tomorrow afternoon after preschool, while I'm in Sydney and husband is in charge (to give him a break?). Wee one will be at preschool on both Thursday and Friday.
It's a quick trip (relatively) for me via Murray's - leave Thursday morning and back home by Friday afternoon. Two meetings and an awards event. It's going to be hectic but I'm looking forward to it.
Unexpectedly shared my bed with a small visitor who arrived around 1:am.
Settled him down and returned him to his own bed an hour or so later.
Toddlers generate their own heat like small furnaces and cling like limpets.
Your heart just melts when you look down at the peacefully sleeping child cuddled into you.
And you feel humbled to know he thinks of you as a safe harbour.
Even at that time of the morning!
