If you're interested in #FruitTree #grafting #HandsOn #education, see info below.
Learn the basic skill and knowledge you need to start grafting and graft your own heritage apple tree to take home!
This #workshop will describe the reasons for grafting, when to graft, and when to collect budwood. The workshop will be hands on and participants will be introduced to tree terminology, grafting tools and materials, and will be shown various grafting techniques. Participants will get the chance to practice their new skills on spare branches and once confident, do an actual graft. Each participant will be able to choose an apple variety from the heratige collection at Welland Orchard to graft on to a dwarfing rootstock, to create a new apple tree to take home.
All tools and materials will be provided.
Be sure to come dressed for the elements as this workshop will be held outdoors.

MOFGA’s Education Center
294 Crosby Brook Rd
Unity, ME 04988 United States
Let us know you're coming!
* In the event of severe weather, the Seed Swap & Scion Exchange will be postponed to the following Sunday, April 5 from 12-4 pm.
"Gardeners and orchardists are invited to bring their #seeds, #scionwood and #cuttings to share. If you don’t have any, come anyway! There is always plenty of seeds and scion to go around.
If you’ve been to the event before, you know that space can get tight at the start of the event. We encourage folks to join the event later in the day — we promise, there are still plenty of seeds and scions available over the duration of the event!
Community members and local seed #growers regularly bring an incredible variety of #vegetable, #fruit, #flower, and #herb seeds. We also regularly have over 150+ types of scionwood to share, including scionwood sourced from MOFGA’s orchards. We will also have limited quantities of #rootstock for sale. Custom #grafting is available by donation to the #MaineHeritageOrchard.
Other items for sharing are welcome such as plants, cuttings, #seedlings, hatching eggs, #kombucha and #YogurtStarters, #salves and other homemade items.
The day’s offerings also include #gardening and #orcharding workshops and demonstrations. Our full list of educational offerings for the day is coming soon!"

The grafted apple trees are ready for winter!
The tree-guard covers are meant to prevent grazing from squirrels. I'm glad to have these put in place as I already saw a squirrel eating the tips of the branches from the established trees.

🌱 Grafting: Growing together Take one plant, join it to another. Watch them heal into one life. Gardeners have done this for centuries, saving heirlooms, shaping orchards, and carrying flavors forward through time.

More garden projects: some of my grafting attempts! Mum bought a second plum tree that is exactly the same variety as the one we already had, so I've been given free reign to try and graft as many varieties as I can on it - sourced from the Rare Fruit Society. Things are looking much more promising that I anticipated, tho it is early days - all of them have some sign of emerging leaves! The only complete failure is the one that dad knocked completely off by accident - whatever. I haven't labeled any of them (who can be bothered) so I'm just going to wait to see what the fruit is like to know what has taken (assuming anything takes!)
Second picture, by best-looking grafts so far: loquat onto a quince rootstock. No sign of anything yet, I just think I wrapped it up really well and the join underneath felt pretty accurate. I got the rootstock and cuttings for free so I won't be too heartbroken if nothing works.
Third picture: rescued a fig tree that my dad was mistreating - he planted it too close to a bayleaf tree that was directly north of it, giving it way too much shade, and then planted a weedy flower next to it that basically smothered it. He got no fruit last year, the ends withered away and several branches rotted. It's shown some signs of life so I removed it and potted it up - he can have it back when he can prove he's responsible enough to take care of it. I planted with it in the pot a daffodil ripped from the garden which will drink up excess moisture in winter to prevent rotting.
