Dawn Sentinel at Gougane Barra

A bunch of us arrived in Gougane Barra this morning to photograph the sunrise, only to be met with driving rain and mist and fog on the hills. A biting wind tore through clothes making for a missed opportunity for all of us.

Luckily, within a few minutes of arriving, a glow could be seen on the horizon, and the rain started to thin out. In another 10 minutes the sky was almost completely clear, as if nothing had happened!

Ironically, I would have liked some high cloud for the sun to bounce off before it rose, but it wasn’t to be so I decided on a silhouette of the tree near the oratory instead. That would fill in the sky nicely.

Bought a beautiful slate with painting on it yesterday before I left where I had spent the summer.
It's of Gougane Barra Oratory, done by Pauline Neville. Her stuff is stunning.

Saint Finbarr, the patron saint of Cork, built a monastery on an island in Gougane Barra. Legend has it that Finbarr was led to the source of the River Lee by an angel, and it was because of this guidance that he founded his monastery here.

When I went to Gougane Barra with Blarney Photography Club a few weeks ago, I met the cutest collie ever. He was so chill and friendly, and he had this gorgeous white and brown fur that matched the scenery perfectly. I think he works at the hotel nearby, but he didn’t charge me for his cuddles.
