Another day in May, another public holiday in France, with an extended weekend to boot, as a significant proportion of French businesses will be either shut or with reduced staffing on Friday. This year, the effect is particularly acute, and already in January, many online magazines were explaining how to optimize one's paid leave allowance with the days off in May. I'm self-employed, so holidays are always a bit meh as far as I'm concerned. Fortunately, I can step out into our small wood and listen to the sound of the birds.
Sound on for this then, a recording of local bird song, with the tropical bird sounding golden orioles featuring as the regular summer and nesting visitor.

Après plein de piqûres de moustiques, des heures d'attentes, des tas de tentatives, j'ai enfin eu des photos pas trop moche de l'insaisissable loriot d'Europe ! Il y a eu de la chance également parce que l'oiseau s'est posé presque en face de moi (ok tout en haut d'un arbre)

After many mosquito bites, hours of waiting and lots of attempts, I finally got an OK photo of the elusive European oriole! I was lucky too, because the bird landed almost in front of me (OK, right on top of a tree).

Les photos (pas terribles) de l’insaisissable loriot d'Europe. Il est jaune et noir, il a la taille d'un merle et un chant super reconnaissable mais non ! Même en restant presque 2h à coté de plusieurs perchoirs (+ d'autres séances dans la semaine passée), il est super dur à observer et encore plus à photographier ! Un oiseau qui nous apprend la patience.

The (not great) photos of the elusive European oriole. It's yellow and black, it's the size of a robin and it has a very recognisable song, but no! Even if you spend almost 2 hours next to several of its perches (+ other sessions in the past week), it's really hard to observe and even harder to photograph! A bird that teaches us patience.
