My first time seeing the larches and my favorite hike of the year, despite how challenging it was. My best buddy, Tim, and I set out on what turned out to be a tough trek to Lake Colchuck, pushing through the steep and rocky trail in the pre-dawn darkness.
We had camped overnight in the car, the last night before the campgrounds closed for the season, just to get an early start. As we climbed, the first hints of morning light started to appear over the rugged peaks of the North Cascades.
By the time we reached the lake, we were met with absolute stillness—a perfect reflection of the mountains in the crystal-clear water. The larches were golden bright and brilliant, and the effort to get there felt completely worth it upon seeing them.
