Turns out, I'm supposed to let the glue sit for 30 minutes before applying the gold. My failure to follow directions caused the smearing you see but I learned and that's what's important.

I’ve recently learned that Age of Apocalype series have Gold Foil TPBs for the multitude of series it spawned. The pictures on eBay were sub-par to be honest, but I got a few and they are hard to make sense out of them in person, too. 90s gimmick to the extreme. There doesn’t seem to be any listing for these editions on the interwebs either, that’s why I haven’t noticed them for over 3 decades. I certainly didn’t see any at my LCS back then.
