Le Monde revealed that France’s aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle was tracked in real time through an officer’s activity on the Strava app. A sailor unknowingly shared running data from the ship, exposing its location in the Mediterranean. The French sailor’s public Strava profile, set as “public,” revealed the near real-time location of the aircraft carrier in the Mediterranean, near Cyprus and Turkey."
This is not an isolated incident. In 2018, Strava’s global heatmap revealed the locations and patrol routes of military bases in places like Afghanistan, Syria, and Iraq, simply because soldiers were recording their runs.
More recently, Strava data has exposed the movements of security teams protecting world leaders, including routes that revealed private residences and travel patterns.
There have even been cases where activity data from naval bases was used to infer submarine patrol schedules, based on when personnel suddenly stopped logging workouts.

The Israeli military has ordered the entire population of Beirut’s southern suburbs to evacuate, as it continued to bomb Lebanon and Iran, while Tehran launched retaliatory strikes against Israel and US bases across the region.
An Israel Defense Forces spokesperson told all residents of Beirut’s southern suburbs – more than 500,000 people – to “save your lives and evacuate your homes immediately”, before Israel launched airstrikes on what he described as Hezbollah targets. The area covered by the order included several hospitals and government ministries.

Wealthier countries are more likely to list politics as a top issue, as are democracies. But the US stands out as a country that’s particularly concerned about the stability of its democratic system and whether it’s still possible to get ahead economically.
Economic anxiety is linked to the health of democratic systems, according to Brendan Nyhan, a Dartmouth political scientist. “A world where people aren’t optimistic about their economic futures is one in which they’re willing to destabilize institutions even further,” Nyhan said.
Americans 35 and under are most likely to list economic issues — including the affordability of food and shelter — as a top issue.
