May 1, 1948 - Senator Glen Hearst Taylor (D-Idaho) was arrested in Birmingham, Alabama, for trying to enter a meeting through a door marked for "Negroes" rather than using the “whites only” door, and convicted of disorderly conduct.

Taylor was the Progressive Party candidate for Vice President, running mate of Henry Wallace. He was in Birmingham to address the Southern Negro Youth Congress.

The #SportsTeamOwner lines that have been bothering me for 6 months. People in #Florida probably know who the model for Helmut von Zeppelin is, maybe Huizenga in 2001?
> He was nearing the rarefied peak of Mount Bastard. When Helmut walked by, even other most vicious corporate bastards sad, "Now that's a bastard!" There was only one more level above him, and von Zeppelin was determined to reach it.

I can't remember if I read the discussion in a #TimDorsey or a #CarlHiaasen book. gotta look around for the #Florida paperbacks laying around and try to find the quotes. Searching turned up articles about subsidizing stadiums, so maybe the paragraphs were in a #Hiaasen book.

Here's all you need to know about the Miami Dolphins' outrageous scheme to publicly finance renovations at Sun Life Stadium:
