I was looking to buy a drink in a small produce store in Boerum Hill (Brooklyn NYC neighborhood) August 14, 2025. While looking at the options, I was surprised when I saw a "LIQUID DEATH" sticker under glass bottles of Coca Cola. I noticed that there was a drink called "Liquid Death" next to the Coke, but note the sticker is poorly placed. From this, I learned what Liquid Death is. (Note: I ended up buying a diet peach Snapple for $1.50. I wish the Snapple came in a glass bottle like the Coke. Glass bottle Snapple tastes better than plastic.)

Caps of Glass Bottles Contaminate Beverages With Microplastics - Slashdot

Microplastics are present in all beverages, but those packaged in glass bottles contain more microplastic particles than those in plastic bottles, cartons or cans. More microplastics in glass bottles than plastic 🥤🔬: Researchers found an average of around 100 microplastic particles per litre in glass bottles of soft drinks, lemonade, iced tea, and beer. That was five to 50 times higher than the rate detected in plastic bottles or metal cans. 🥂⚗️

Glass bottles, long considered a safer, more eco-friendly choice, aren’t as “pure” as we thought. New research shows they can shed microplastic and nanoplastic fragments into the drinks they hold.
It’s a reminder that no material is completely inert — and that every packaging option has its trade-offs.

Drinks in glass bottles contain more microplastics than those in other containers

Drinks contained in glass bottles contain more microplastic particles than those in plastic bottles, cartons or cans. This was the surprising finding of a study conducted by the Boulogne-sur-Mer unit of the ANSES Laboratory for Food Safety. The scientists hypothesised that these plastic particles could come from the paint used on bottle caps. These findings have highlighted a source of microplastics in drinks that manufacturers can easily address.
