Not everyone who sent Gladstone letters was friendly. Some of his detractors went to considerable artistic effort in their attempts to goad him.

This letter has a drawing of Gladstone chopping down a tree labelled ‘British Empire’, with a poem starting ‘The same old game the same old game, to destroy the British Empire is my aim.’

We must admit, the drawing is actually not a bad likeness!

#Today It’s a month since I worked on my book, being prevented by holidays & preoccupied with building work at home. I find I can only settle to write in a library, where I’m surrounded by fellow-readers/writers & silence is enforced. So I’m off this morning to my favourite place that does all that for me.
