If anyone in the #Exeter area is looking for a pet #GiantAfricanLandSnail we've had a bit of a snoops and not checked the substrate frequently enough for eggs which it turns out develop much faster in the hot weather. Shelley (the bold one enjoying a bath in the picture) and Byron have made at least 30 snabies, which are free to a good home.
Can anyone guess where I went today? π

Creature Feature: The invasive #GiantAfricanLandSnail
By Anna Stephenson , July 20, 2022
"The giant African land snail, according to invasivespeciesinfo.gov, was first introduced to Hawaii in 1936 because they were imported for educational purposes, as pets or in cargo. Since then, it has become an #invasive species and an agricultural pest.
"Another unintended consequence of #GALS is the introduction of the rosy wolf snail to Hawaii. According to the Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources, rosy wolf snails were deliberately introduced in the 1950s in the hopes they would eat GALS, who were eating too many crops.
"The rosy wolf snail, DLNR states on its Snail Extinction Prevention Program website, then went on to eat endangered native #Hawaiian snails instead, driving some to #extinction.

#Florida city under #quarantine after deadly #GiantAfricanLandSnail detected
Story by Katherine Donlevy, June 20, 2023
"State officials placed part of a Florida city under quarantine Tuesday as they race to eradicate the invasive, parasite-carrying invasive giant African snail.
"The 3.5-mile section of #Miramar in #BrowardCounty β located just 11 miles west of Hollywood β will be covered in a metaldehyde-based molluscicide to exterminate the insects after a giant African snail was found in the area earlier this month.
"Residents will be able to move out of the treatment area freely but are prevented from moving any plant-based supplies that could harbor the mammoth molluskβs eggs.
βUnder the quarantine, it is unlawful to move a giant African land snail or a regulated article, including, but not limited to, plants, plant parts, plants in soil, soil, yard waste, debris, compost or building materials, within, through or from the defined quarantine area without a compliance agreement,β the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services announced.
"The agency confirmed that a giant African snail β which can stretch up to 8 inches long β was spotted in the area in June, prompting an increased survey.
"Giant African snails have been contended as 'one of the most damaging snails in the world' for their threat to both agriculture and human life. The invasive Giant African land snail carried the rat lungworm parasite that can induce #meningitis in humans."
