Title: Endogenous Fragility in Complex Systems: The Mallinckrodt Cycle and the Compression–Resonance–Tension Index (CRTI) Author: Bernd von Mallinckrodt Description This research note introduces the Mallinckrodt Cycle, a theoretical lifecycle model for complex adaptive systems, together with the Compression–Resonance–Tension Index (CRTI), a diagnostic framework designed to identify endogenous fragility in social, economic, organizational, and technological systems. Traditional resilience and collapse theories often attribute systemic breakdown primarily to exogenous shocks, such as environmental disturbances, economic crises, or geopolitical disruptions. In contrast, the framework proposed here emphasizes the internal metabolic cost of structural order. It argues that complex systems frequently collapse not because of insufficient structure, but because of excessive structural compression. The Mallinckrodt Cycle conceptualizes systemic evolution as a sequence of nine phases: Chaos – stochastic variance and minimal structure Emergence – formation of initial patterns and dissipative structures Growth – expansion and increasing organization Maturity – dynamic equilibrium between stability and adaptive variance Over-optimization – progressive structural compression Singularization – loss of adaptive capacity and increasing rigidity Exhaustion – cumulative energetic cost required to maintain non-resonant order Collapse – rapid endogenous breakdown (often observed as a Seneca-type decline) Return to Chaos – renewed variance enabling reorganization To operationalize these dynamics, the Compression–Resonance–Tension Index (CRTI) introduces three core systemic variables: • Structural Compression (C) – the degree of centralization, standardization, and rigid coupling within the system. • Resonance Capacity (R) – the ability of the system to process, integrate, and respond to environmental complexity. • Strategic Reserve (Res) – the available structural or cognitive slack that buffers internal tension.
