THE TEACHERS' LOUNGE - Ilker Çatak (2023) ★★★★
---
Remarkably intense and gripping from start to finish, the pressure builds in a 4:3 format as the situation takes on hallucinatory proportions. The performance is exceptional. It is a great success.

Ernst Lubitsch's Eyes of the Mummy (1918) sounds like a horror film but it's a romantic melodrama although there's an ancient Egyptian tomb and a curse, and strange and inexplicable events. Pola Negri stars. Early Lubitsch is so wild and crazy.

The Spiders (1919-20), very early Fritz Lang film combining action and adventure in exotic locales with romance and intrigue. A sportsman discovers a lost remnant of the Inca Empire. And there's a ruthless secret society. Huge amounts of fun.

The Oyster Princess is a 1919 German Ernst Lubitsch film, described perfectly as a grotesque comedy. An American millionaire decides to buy a prince for his daughter. Good-natured fun with typical early Lubitsch crazy bizarre touches.

The Treasure of the Silver Lake (1962) is a German western based on a Karl May novel (May was and is a pop culture icon in Germany). An entertaining treasure hunt western with Herbert Lom as a very nasty outlaw. Visually impressive.

Ernst Lubitsch's The Doll (Die Puppe, 1919) is like a child's storybook come to life. No movie has ever revelled in its artificiality to this extent. And we have a girl playing a doll playing a girl. A gloriously insane fairy tale delight.

The Curse of the Hidden Vault (1964) is a typical early Rialto Edgar Wallace krimi. In other words it's hugely entertaining. Some good plot twists and visually impressive and imaginative, especially the wonderful hidden vault complex sets. Plus, Klaus Kinski!

The Hound of Blackwood Castle (1968), one of the later colour German Rialto Edgar Wallace krimis, with a bit of a Hound of the Baskervilles vibe this time. A visual delight, with the gothic trappings laid on extra thick. Hugely enjoyable.

Murderers Club of Brooklyn (1967), 5th of the German crime movies (set in the US) featuring G-Man Jerry Cotton. This time he's faced with a kidnapping. Some nasty twists in this one. Stylish, energetic and fun with a nice 60s vibe.

The Red Circle (1960), the second of Rialto's German Edgar Wallace krimis. There's a blackmail racket, a question of inheritance, a sexy bad girl and lots of murders. Well-paced, well-crafted, stylish and wildly and deliriously entertaining.
