Over time focussing exclusively on any metric will render it meaningless - #goodhartslaw and #nicolsonslament 'hitting the target but missing the point'. The temptation will be to debauch official statistics to get there - as happened with #unemploymentdata in the #uk in the 1980s! Not to mention reported economic growth in the #GermanDemocraticRepublic in the 1970s and1980s - which ended up fooling nearly everyone!

I just finished reading Beyond the Wall: East Germany 1949-1990 by Katja Hoyer.

It’s so interesting and well written. Highly recommended.

I only read it because I saw it on the new book display at the library- thank you librarians!

Punk in the GDR

Photography by Harald Hauswald who recorded life in East Germany in the 70s and 80s - including those who were rebelling against the norm.

"For me, taking photographs that the GDR authorities did not like was a kind of inner liberation. To not be able to travel freely when you’re young is very depressing. Taking photographs was the work I did to fight against that feeling. A kind of tit for tat. If you hurt me, I hurt you."
