I read 81 books (approximately) in 2025. My most read author is #GeorgetteHeyer - who I comfort read frequently!
My favourite non-fic was The Rise & Reign of Mammals by palaeontologist Steve Brusatte. A follow up to his book on dinosaurs which was equally fascinating.
My favourite children’s book was Stonewitch by Sky McKenna. Book four of her excellent hedgewitch series. My 10yo & I adore them! Great characters and world building based on myths from the British isles. @bookstodon #books #reading
Four years ago, at the beginning of lockdown in the UK, someone (not here, or I would credit her) suggested reading one of #GeorgetteHeyer 's romantic comedies as a distraction, and the #GeorgetteHeyerReadalong was born. It ran on Twitter for two years, as close as I can remember, and because of it, I met a whole host of funny, feisty people. Their book recommendations are much better than average, their conversations veer from serious to surreal, and their unstinting support for one another is something I've never previously experienced outside my immediate family.

I'm covering a minaudière. Most people use glue, but it went Very Ill when I tried it. Something I have in common with Anthea Darracott!

Dishonourable mention to Wings of Fire which is my 11yo’s #BedtimeReading and by the 13th book it’s wearing thin…

I have a confession.

Today I finished reading my very first Georgette Heyer novel.

I know! How can I possibly write Regency Romance without having inhaled all her works years ago...
...tbh, they always sounded a bit too het for me, is why I've not read until now.

But anyway! I really enjoyed it - The Corinthian - so if anyone would like to recommend me their fave #GeorgetteHeyer novel to read next, please do!

Been reading the copy of Faro’s Daughter by #GeorgetteHeyer I bought on holiday on and off and last night a leaflet fell out: an early 1950s pamphlet for the Regent’s Institute (promising to turn amateurs into journalists and magazine writers for an undisclosed “small” fee). I am now obsessed with The Regent’s Institute (followers of my work on the Lady’s Magazine will know I’m interested in so-called amateur writing). I know Christopher Hilliard has written about the Institute a bit. Who else?

Via Steve Ammidown: "It’s #GeorgetteHeyer’s birthday, so let’s remember that she loved inserting antisemitism into her “foundational” Regency romances!"
