Earth's internal heat budget (Earth 🌍)

Earth's internal heat budget is fundamental to the thermal history of the Earth. The flow of heat from Earth's interior to the surface is estimated at 47±2 terawatts and comes from two main sources in roughly equal amounts: the radiogenic heat produced by the radioactive decay of isotopes in the mantl...

* inner core intrigued researchers since 1936 discovery
* core's rotation speed, direction center of decades-long debate
* evidence that core’s spin changed dramatically in recent years
* scientists have remained divided over what exactly is happening, what it means
* changes in rotational speed follow 70-year cycle

Earth’s core has slowed so much it’s moving backward, scientists confirm. Here’s what it could mean

Deep inside Earth is a solid metal ball that rotates independently of our spinning planet, like a top whirling around inside a bigger top, shrouded in mystery.

#UVic offers a geophysics undergraduate degree through a joint program between the School of Earth and Ocean Sciences (SEOS) and the Department of Physics and Astronomy. At the graduate and research levels, #geophysics at UVic is concentrated in SEOS and focuses largely, although not entirely, on topics in #earthquake #seismology, active #tectonics, and #geodynamics.

Isostatic depression (Glaciology 🗻)

Isostatic depression is the sinking of large parts of the Earth's crust into the asthenosphere caused by a heavy weight placed on the Earth's surface, often glacial ice during continental glaciation. Isostatic depression and isostatic rebound occur at rates of centimeters per year. Greenland is an example of an isostatically depressed region.
