Beyond All Horizons, by SACRAMENTUM

from the album Far Away From The Sun (2020 remaster)

SACRAMENTUM

This week's #ThursdayFiveList theme is #GenreQuintessance - five tracks that perfectly represent a single genre, or pick five different genres and choose one track that perfectly represents each.

Guess I'll go with 5 genres and 5 bands, cuz I don't like being pigeonholed.

The troll in me wants to go with a hyper specific sub-sub-sub-sub-genre like Troll Metal, because I find it hilarious that there's enough bands that fall into that category that it can qualify as a genre at all. Seriously, there's bands that specifically play metal music with the sole purpose of highlight troll related matters. (High-fantasy style trolls, that is, not internet trolls, that's probably a different genre)

I don't specifically listen to bands in the #TrollMetal genre, I'm just _aware_ of it. So I'll just drop this one:

1. Finntroll - Trollhammaren — https://youtu.be/CJhi43RntJk

Next up, let's go with some #Shoegaze -- so named because a rock critic complained that all the bands from this genre spend the entire show staring at their shoes messing with the distortion pedals of their guitars. Swirling walls of guitar distortion are pretty much the defining aspect of the genre. Vocals tend to be absorbed into the wall of distortion.

2. Slowdive - Star Roving — https://youtu.be/ogCih4OavoY

#PostPunk is one of those genres that is hard to pin down, since it's more about a cultural shift and time period than a particular sound, but I tend to associate it with "bands that sound like they were recorded down a hallway”. And what could be more exemplary than Joy Division?

3. Joy Division - Dead Souls — https://youtu.be/mKWHa65cmns

#PostRock is similarly hard to pin down sonically, but it's mostly defined by "traditional" rock instruments being used to create music pieces that feel more like a soundtrack/soundscape.

4. This Will Destroy You - Quiet — https://youtu.be/mWRa3-3UM0o… (1/2)

The _Second British Invasion_ is one of those genres that's really tied to a specific time period. All I know is that I listened to these songs all the time during that period.

1. Tainted Love / Soft Cell

2. Tempted / Squeeze

Taking you back to "alternative radio" finds from the late 90s. You had to be in a big enough city for "alternative" to even be a radio station option.
